Founded in 681, Bulgaria is one of the most ancient states on the European continent. The country is famous for its Thracian Gold Treasure. It also boasts nine cultural monuments featuring on the UNESCO list among which Rila Monastery, The Madara Horseman and Pirin National Par k.
The Bulgarian landscape is highly diverse. The vast low lands of the Danube plains dominate the North, and in the South, there are high lands and elevated plain.
Along the Black Sea coast there are 130 km of excellent vast beaches. Only few European countries can be proud of such beautiful nature. With a variety of picturesque sites both in the mountains and by the sea, rich historic heritage and good climate, Bulgaria holds great potential for tourism and relaxation all year round. In fact, this is one of the most significant characteristics of the country’s economy as the biggest share of domestic and foreign investments today is in the tourism industry and real estate. Similarly to Spain several years back, Bulgaria develops very strong capacity in this field and in short future, it will become one of the most attractive places in Europe for recreation and living. Bulgaria is a small country with population of approximately 8 millions. It is a constitutional republic with stable democracy and rapidly growing economy. Main religion is Christian Orthodox. The country joined NATO in 2004 and its accession in the EU is due in 2007. The capital of Bulgaria is Sofia. Other important cities are Varna - main port and centre of tourism, Plovdiv, Bourgas, Russe.
